Jonathan (Charles Laughton), a famous New York tycoon, suffers from a serious illness and believes he will die soon. He decides to meet his son John and his fiancée Gloria. Unfortunately, Gloria is unable to keep her appointment due to an accident. To fulfill his father"s wish, John finds Anne (Deanna Durbin), a cloakroom worker, and asks her to pretend to be his fiancée.
